OUSD Policy on Bullying, Harassment and Discrimination
The local educational agency (LEA) adopted a policy that prohibits discrimination, harassment, intimidation, and bullying based on actual or perceived ancestry, age, color, disability, gender, gender identity, gender expression, nationality, race or ethnicity, religion, sex, sexual orientation, or association with a person or a group with one or more of these actual or perceived characteristics.
Measles information for parents
The San Diego County Office of Health and Human Services has verified several reported cases of measles throughout the county. Please know that NO cases of this highly contagious viral infection have been reported in the Oceanside Unified School District.
Click Measles Information to learn more about what you can to help prevent the spread of this condition, and what to do should you suspect your child or some other person in your family or household may have symptoms of measles. In the event of any reported cases in our district, you will be informed. Visit Centers for Disease Control for further information.

5-Star Gifted and Talented Award for OUSD
The California Association for the Gifted and Talented (CAG) has recognized the Oceanside Unified School District as one of only five districts in the state to receive the group’s 5-Star Award. The district will receive the award at the CAG Annual Conference, February 15 in Anaheim.
CAG is comprised of educators, parents and community members dedicated to meeting the unique academic, social and emotional needs of gifted and talented students. Established in 1966, CAG is one of the nation’s largest state advocacy groups of its kind.

California Healthy Youth Act
The Oceanside Unified School District has adopted a new comprehensive sexual health and HIV prevention education program as required by the California Healthy Youth Act. Please use this link to find all the lesson plans - Advocates for Youth.
Materials are also available in the office anytime during office hours for review.
At this time the district has made a decision to put the teaching of this material on hold. As soon as new guidelines for use have been established, you will be provided with additional information regarding dates and lessons to be taught at South Oceanside Elementary School.
California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress
Beginning on April 18th, our students in grades 3 - 5 will begin to take these assessments. These tests were created specifically to gauge each student's performance in English language arts/literacy (ELA). mathematics, and science. These tests measure the skills called for by the academic standards, including the ability to write clearly, think critically, and solve problems.

On Monday, Jan. 30, the Oceanside Unified School District is upgrading to a new Notification System called SchoolMessenger. The new notification system will replace ParentLink. The new system allows schools to contact parents and families in a more efficient and timely manner. The new system also allows parents and families the option of managing how they receive calls and information from their child’s school.

As you might know, October has been chosen as the "Anti-bullying" month. We wear white shirts and it is a great way to create awareness. We also think that every month should be "Anti-bullying" month.

Box Top Collections and class competitions occur monthly! Be sure to get your Box Tops turned in the Wednesday before the next pride assembly to make them count for that month! Be sure to write your child's name and room number on the back if you would like for them to be entered in the extra prize drawing. Class with the most BoxTops will receive the trophy filled with a special prize! Two additional students will be choosen at random for extra prizes! Keep on collecting those BoxTops!

Amended Policy on Clearing Absences
The Board of Education amended administration regulation 5113(a). The policy now reads, "Absences must be cleared within 5 school days after the student returns to school." This can be done with a note or a phone call to our attendance line at 760-435-2100. Thank you
The Green Team
We are looking for interested parents to volunteer to support the zero waste program at South Oceanside. Parents are need to help students during snack and lunch sort their waste into the correct barrels. If you are able to volunteer, please contact Melissa Betz via email firstname.lastname@example.org. Volunteers are needed Monday - Friday during both snack and lunch. You can volunteer once, weekly, or monthly.

California is one of 45 states nationwide to adopt the new Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in English/Language Arts and mathematics. This shift in teaching has been characterized by some as “the most significant change to classroom instruction since 1998,” when California first adopted its own academic standards. The OUSD Student Wellness Policy focuses on nutrition and physical education.
Foods and beverages sold to students through the district’s child nutrition program, student stores, vending machines and fundraisers meet or exceed state and federal nutrition standards. Nutrition education is provided as a part of the district’s health education program.
